THE GAINSBOROUGH PACKET
Matt Stokes
2009
10mins s16mm
Commissioned by 176 and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and directed by Newcastle-based artist Matt Stokes.
Stokes’s works combine film, performance, music and installation. His varied practice is akin to social anthropology and often requires a prolonged period of immersed research into a particular subculture.
'THE GAINSBOROUGH PACKET' is based on a letter found in the Tyne and Wear Archive telling the life story of John Burdikin who came to Newcastle in 1796.
Matt Stokes is represented by Workplace Gallery.
